In an exciting example of industry-academic collaboration, Deutsche Hydrapro had the opportunity to play a role in accelerating the future of electric braking systems through a partnership with its parent company, Aston Dynamics, and the University of Toronto’s Formula Racing Team. This joint effort illustrates how cutting-edge companies and rising engineering talent can collaborate to redefine the capabilities of modern braking technology. Electric-Over-Hydraulic (EOH) brake actuators are reshaping the way braking systems are designed, especially for advanced vehicles where traditional hydraulic braking systems no longer suffice. Deutsche Hydrapro is recognized as a global leader in EOH actuator development and distribution, building robust, reliable solutions that enhance braking performance and responsiveness in a range of applications, from trailers to autonomous vehicles. When students from the University of Toronto’s Formula Racing Team began encountering challenges with the braking system on their electric, driverless race car, they turned to Deutsche Hydrapro for help. Recognized for excellence in EOH braking technology, Deutsche Hydrapro opened the door to collaboration with its parent company, Aston Dynamics, an engineering leader that designs and manufactures advanced braking systems. What began as a technical consultation quickly evolved into a groundbreaking partnership. Aston Dynamics, intrigued by the team’s unconventional use of EOH actuators, and Deutsche Hydrapro joined forces with University of Toronto engineering students to push the boundaries of what electric braking can do. Rather than relocating the students, Aston Dynamics established Aston Dynamics Canada, allowing them to work part-time while completing their degrees and remain close to the university’s engineering ecosystem. This proximity fostered rapid innovation and knowledge exchange between students and industry experts. During this collaboration, the team focused on expanding the capabilities of EOH braking systems in new ways, integrating advanced sensors, GPS, data logging, and Bluetooth control features. These innovations aim to make electric brake systems smarter, more adaptive, and more suited to emerging applications like autonomous vehicles and performance EVs. By combining Deutsche Hydrapro and Aston Dynamics’ expertise in hydraulic and EOH brake technology with the academic innovation and fresh perspectives of engineering students, this partnership exemplifies how young engineers and seasoned industry professionals can co-create solutions that accelerate technological progress. Participants gained invaluable real-world experience and contributed to meaningful advancements, while Deutsche Hydrapro and Aston Dynamics benefited from fresh insights and accelerated product innovation efforts.
